Two major activities produce the majority of your carbon emissions - holiday flights and day-to-day travelling. Amazingly for every gallon of unleaded petrol you put in your car, the CO2 released into the atmosphere is 8.87Kg. Air travel accounts for 0.19KG CO2 per mile. One tree “ offsets” 730 Kg of CO2 over its lifetime.

One tree absorbs approximately 1 tonne of CO2 over 40 years. If you produced 20 tonnes of CO2 a year then in theory if you planted 20 trees you could be carbon neutral. To be carbon neutral is not easily achievable. The most practical way of doing something achievable about your personal carbon footprint is to take as many different steps as you can to reduce emissions. These steps could include using low energy light bulbs, driving less, flying less , turning down your central heating and adopting or planting trees.

You may wish to refer to the European Commission's "You Control Climate Change" website and the Act On CO2 website. Both of these give helpful suggestions on reducing CO2. There are many ways of helping to offset your own CO2 emissions and you can help by adopting trees.
